Want To Live Longer-Drink Coffee

Thursday, May 17th, 2012

Researchers have some reassuring news for the legions of coffee drinkers who can’t get through the day without a latte, cappuccino, iced mocha, double-shot of espresso or a plain old cuppa joe: That coffee habit may help you live longer.

A new study that tracked the health and coffee consumption of more than 400,000 older adults for nearly 14 years found that java drinkers were less likely to die during the study than their counterparts who eschewed the brew. In fact, men and women who averaged four or five cups of coffee per day had the lowest risk of death, according to a report in Thursday’s edition of the New England Journal of Medicine.

The research doesn’t prove that coffee deserves the credit for helping people live longer. But it is the largest analysis to date to suggest that the beverage’s reputation for being a liquid vice may be undeserved.

“There’s been concerns for a long time that coffee might be a risky behavior,” said study leader Neal Freedman, an epidemiologist with the National Cancer Institute who drinks coffee “here and there.” “The results offer some reassurance that it’s not a risk factor for future disease.”

Let’s Get Out And Exercise – It’s a Natural Medicine!

Wednesday, May 16th, 2012

(HealthNewsDigest.com) – “Exercise is a “Natural Medicine”, I coined years ago, that is! In fact, “Exercise is Medicine” is the trademark for a National Initiative started by The American Heart Association and The American College of Sports Medicine. So during this month of May, let’s start, revamp, increase, well you get my point; exercise and physical activity is the theme. In fact, one of my favorite TV programs, “The Doctor’s” has also begun an initiative “Get Moving May!” in support of National Physical Fitness & Sports Month and in partnership with the President’s Challenge. “The Doctors” are encouraging everyone of us to get a jump start on a healthier lifestyle by getting active every single day in the month of May! For more info, and to get started go to www.thedoctorstv.com/main/content/Get_Moving_May All this month, we’ll be discussing the “how to” exercise and get moving, but now let’s look at some of the why’s!

Exercise as a Natural Medicine is gaining popularity among us Americans and it is the system of medicine that focuses on the prevention and treatment of disease, overall health and well-being using natural therapies and products. Let’s focus on exercise, my favorite natural medicine, because I wonder, “How many of us view exercise as medicine for our body”? I’m not sure how many of us do, but I can suggest that almost all of us can participate in some form of exercise and all of us can reap a benefit.

According to the “World Cancer Research Fund & The American Institute for Cancer Research” as stated in their “Food, Nutrition, Physical Activity and the Prevention of Cancer’s Global Perspective Report 2007, physical activity is vital to our health and prevention of cancer along with other important healthy lifestyle behaviors, of course.

Food, nutrition and physical activity all components of Natural Medicine and now traditional medicine, have joined together in the viewpoint that exercise is vital to our health and well being. Exercise plays a role in disease prevention that includes some cancers but it plays a vital role in all. Why? Regular moderate exercise benefits every body system! Here’s how.

Exercise will

Increase our muscular strength, muscular endurance, and increase our bone density; all, which will lessen the risk for injury. As we strengthen our musculoskeletal system, we will function better in our daily lives during health & during illness, regardless of age, sex or weight.

Get Creative And Burn Some Calories

Wednesday, April 11th, 2012

Exercise doesn’t always have to be 60 minutes of cardio at the gym. Sometimes, it can just be little things in the middle of our day that get us moving. So try 1 or 2 of these a day and you might surprise yourself with the results:

1. How about exercising while sitting down. Always keep a couple hand weights by the couch. While watching television or movie you lift, curl or whatever you can think of. Once you start, you’d be amazed at how creative you can get in finding ways to work different muscles while not even getting up.

2. Brushing teeth and build stronger legs. Instead of just standing there with that toothbrush, do 10 squats, lunges, or wall-sits. That’s better than just looking in the mirror staring at yourself. (more…)

The Calmness Of Easter

Sunday, April 8th, 2012

I can remember as a child waking up bright and early on that Sunday morning. I was so excited to start the day, even more than usual because well, it was Easter! It was going to be a day of celebration. Full of candy, family, more candy and of course a delicious ham with all the trimmings. When I first walked down the stairs I looked over at the table in the kitchen in wonder of all the magical colors of the holiday. The peeps, candy eggs and other colorful treats all wrapped in bright green grass nestled in those all too familiar wicker baskets. The same baskets that throughout the year I would trip over when I was doing something I wasn’t supposed to be doing down in the basement.

Time And The Dog Poop

Sunday, April 1st, 2012

There are many mornings I turn over to look at the clock and think to myself, “I don’t want to work-out today!” I moan and groan looking at the minutes go by one by one, contemplating what the heck to do. As the minutes start moving quicker and quicker I know that if I miss that window of opportunity its all over. (more…)

Moooove Over Sport Drinks, The Benefits Of Chocolate Milk

Thursday, March 29th, 2012

Many people are unaware of the benefits of milk let alone chocolate milk. Studies have been done separately on each milk and chocolate, but never in combination. It wasn’t until recently that scientists began to delve into the benefits of chocolate milk versus water or sport drinks after a workout. Studies now show that chocolate milk aids the body in recovery, most importantly the muscles. (more…)
